ABIDING

Happy New Year! There’s something refreshing about turning the page into a new season. New goals, a guiding word, a meaningful Bible verse, or even a simple phrase of encouragement — these small anchors help keep us focused on where we’re going rather than on what we didn’t accomplish last year.
Every January, many of us map out plans that we hope will push us forward. Reflecting on the past and desiring growth is a healthy rhythm. But if we’re honest, there are certain goals that seem to appear on our lists year after year: eating better, exercising more, deepening our devotional life, reading Scripture daily, staying connected with family and friends, and learning to slow down long enough to rest and reflect.
John 15:4 reminds us, “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me.”
That verse gently shifts our perspective. Maybe the point isn’t to perfect a long list of self‑improvements. Maybe the invitation is simpler — to abide. To stay close. To remain connected to the One who produces the fruit we keep striving for on our own.
What if this year, instead of chasing every goal at once, we focused on this single, steady practice of abiding? When the branch stays connected to the vine, fruit comes naturally. Strength grows. Peace deepens. Priorities realign. And the areas we’ve struggled with year after year begin to shift, not by our effort alone, but by His life flowing through us.
Perhaps this year’s resolution isn’t a list at all — just one quiet commitment: stay close to Him, and trust that everything else will grow in its time.
